We have been doing something just like that for vertically installed
rods at 0-35 and 0-70 cm.

Our calculations are as follows:

Because the integrated measurement of the percent soil water in the 0
0.7 m depth interval (SW70) contains all of the soil water measured
by the 0 0.35 m waveguides (SW35), the percent soil water content in
the 0.35-0.7 m portion of the profile (SW3570) can be estimated by
subtraction from the following equation:

SW3570 = [(SW70 * 0.7 m3)- (SW35 * 0.35 m3)] / 0.35m3 		(1)

where 0.7 and 0.35 m3 are the total and partial volume of a
hypothetical soil sample 1 x 1 x (0.7 or 0.35) m.
