Re: Volumetric vs Gravimetric

Direct comparisons between instruments always yield the safest and most
highly correlated data. Gravimetric sampling is accurate but has too many
error factors via sampling and the like. Tools such as the Diviner,
Enviroscan, Neutron probes etc are good in that they provide accurate
repeateable data from a site, but the number of sites is usually limited by
cost. Simple effective tools such as Watermarks and the EC type probes may
not be as accurate, but to a grower they offer a cheap tool to do
scheduling, especially at the stages. As most growers tend to be view
irrigation scheduling as more of an irritant, with set times based on
intervals between dinner and supper with a bit if an allowance for dessert,
anything is a step up.

Hopefully I intend to use the Diviner to provide a greater amount of data
thru the profile than I can with the Watermarks to allow a more
"site-specific" tuning of the system based on rooting depth and soil
characteristic at mangement zones thruout the field.

I appreciate your running of this list as I do all the list mgrs. It makes
jobs like mine quite a bit easier than having to rummage thru the library
only to find articles from 1964.
