I think that PROFILING water-content, rather than always determining mean
values, is a challenge for the future of TDR. The Imko-Trime with the "Tube"
probe and the "Moisture Point" system from ESI are, as far as I know, the
only two commercial systems already available but there are still some
problems.
Impeadnce spectroscopy from TDR waveforms is also an interesting research
direction since it can provide information on the water-potential inside the
soil. On this topic, you can look at Max Hilhorst Phd thesis or at the
papers of T. Heimovaara.
