It has recently been qualified for measurement of thermal diffusivity. The primary application of this additional measurement is to estimate the "storage term" in the soil energy balance. As such it is used in high accuracy Bowen Ratio stations. Another interesting aspect, and the reason for sending this message to the sowacs mailing list, is that changes in soil thermal diffusivity are directly related to changes in water content. Although TP01 is not advertised as a water content sensor, (it does not have a particularly high absolute accuracy) it might be a useful tool for use in highly saline soils, or to create some redundancy in the observations in meteorological measurement stations. The repeatability of the measurements is very good, so trends can be monitored quite well.
