Re: TEK 1502 batteries

Dave,

The Tektronix 1502 may be powered from a 12 VDC power supply in lieu of the
internal, removable battery pack. Normally, when inserted into the 1502
case, the battery pack plugs into a duplex (dual inline) banana plug that
is built into the 1502. We have used a dual inline banana plug adapter from
Radio Shack (no. 247-717) to rig up an adapter for 12 VDC power from
lead-acid batteries, solar power system, electronic power supply, etc. The
1502 uses about 1 Ampere at 12 VDC, so make sure the power supply can
deliver this much current. We bolt the dual inline banana plug to the
inside of a 13-cm length of 4.2-cm outside diameter PVC plastic pipe (see
attached JPEG photos). The wire from the power supply is attached to the
screw terminals of the dual inline plug adapter. The length of PVC pipe
allows us to push the adapter onto the banana plugs inside the cable tester.

If desired, it is easy enough to add a circuit to allow the computer to
turn the power on and off. We built the circuit on a piece of perf board,
and cut a slot in the PVC pipe to hold the perf board in place (see
attached JPEG photos). Details of the circuit are given on our web site at
http://www.cprl.ars.usda.gov/programs/

We have also rebuilt the nickle-cadmium battery packs using C-size NiCd
cells. This is a lot of work; and NiCd cells with soldering tabs are needed
(difficult to find in some places). We used Panasonic batteries purchased
as part no. P190T-ND from Digi-Key Corp. (218-681-6674, FAX: 218-681-3380).
But, if you need the battery pack for portable use of the 1502, this is one
way to go.

Hope this is helpful,

Steve
