Probably not what you're looking for, but since no one else has 
responded...

I worked on a project studying diurnal changes in soil water 
potential for quite a few years.  The focus was on shallower depths, 
but diurnal fluctuations were seen at 80 and 100 cm depths as 
well.  Note that these changes appeared to be plant mediated, and 
we were studying water potential (via soil psychrometry), not water 
content.
