In my experience both professionally and through research, polymers have
been used to improve or maintain infiltration.  Our company has tried
successfully tried the use of PAM to maintain infilatration with highly
sodic irrigation water.  Long term it was not viable because of the sodic
chemistry of the soil was not desireable but the PAM helped maintain
infiltration rates.  I have not heard of anyone using polymers to reduce
infiltration.  Seems to me you should need a dispersant to reduce
infiltration such as a sodium compound not a polymer which will encourage
flocculation and maintain soil structure.

Hello,
              We are investigating the use of polymers to reduce
infiltration
into mineralised waste rock at a mine site. The rocks   are  chloritic
schists
which weather rapidly. The surface is compacted with an impact roller and
the
surface texture is a sandy loam with about 50 % rock fragments. I am
interested
in any experience people have using PAM, PVA or other products to reduce
infiltration.
