Refereeing SOWACS

Bruce:

I regret any offense that may have been caused by my recent posting. My
comments in reference to the Aquaflex sensor were not intended to denigrate
that companies' products nor the individual who runs Aquaflex (whom I have
never met), but rather to stimulate thought toward solving systemic problems
associated with agricultural economics and technological innovation.

I have become ever more frustrated by economic conditions endured by my
friends and relatives in the small town in Kansas where I grew up. In vain
over a decade ago, I tried to interest local farmers and other community
business persons in the benefits available using PC's and associated technology.

An introductory workshop drew only a single participant--a banker who later
turned out to be a crook. While showing little interest in information
technology and automated controls, local farmers attended a meeting at the
COOP to discuss sunflowers (which adorn the country side) with SRO numbers.

For nearly three decades, I have advocated constructive application of
technology to ease mankind's burdens, improve quality of life and brighten
the Earth's future. I sometimes get frustrated and angry at situations that
do not seem to make sense, i. e., tons of wheat rotting on the ground while
millions starve and rural America shriveling to dust amid tremendous
expansion of telecommuting opportunities.

When the West (as in the Wild, Wild, West of the US pioneers) was young,
people could depend on each other for help during troubled times. I do not
believe this occurred only from survival necessity. It seems as our world
has grown "technologically smaller" greater distances seperate individuals
because of greed, selfishness and fear.

Survival of humankind requires availablility of food and water--not
recognition of an individual, a technology or the profitability of a
particular business.

I would like to see some testimonials on SOWACS from the implementing
pioneers in the soil moisture sensing business. I know that their paths
have not been easy and that they could provide valuable lessons for those
headed the same direction.

Yours truly,

Marty Grogan
