In addition to the Linear Variable Displacement Transducer, people 
have been using sap flow measurements to manage their scheduling of 
tree crops. You might like to talk to Jiri Kucera@rat.fce.vutbr.cz 
of Environmental Measuring Systems in the Czech Republic about his 
sap flow meters. The Dynamax flow meters are another alternative -
