The best use of moisture sensing technology may be yet to come and be a cousin of precision farming techniques. If water becomes scarce, more attention may be required to provide dynamic allocation of water during a pivot cycle, for example. Water sensors could modulate valves on the pivot arm--a task certainly not suitable for manual labor. The economics of this approach remain unsupported given today's cost basis.
