CSIRO Tropical Agriculture is conducting systems research to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the Australian Sugar Industry. New initiatives are aimed at water and nutrient management and best cane supply arrangements through integration across the industry value chain. We are seeking staff to join a highly motivated multidisciplinary team researching issues on sustainable sugarcane production. These positions are based either in Townsville or Brisbane, but with close interaction with researchers and industry across the geographical spread of the Australian sugar industry. CROPPING SYSTEMS SCIENTIST Indefinite. $56K - $79K plus superannuation (Ref: TV99-01) CSIRO Tropical Agriculture, Townsville Qld, AUSTRALIA This position will take a leadership role in a multidisciplinary team working with industry to develop innovative management solutions for sustainable sugarcane production, taking into account climatic variability, crop-soil interactions and different production systems. The role will involve integrating disciplinary research in crop physiology, soil science, simulation modelling and systems analysis to provide beneficial outcomes for industry and the community. The focus will be on developing on-farm management strategies for enhanced profitability but also accommodating goals of maintenance of soil and water resources and minimising potential adverse environmental impacts from sugarcane production. CROP-SOIL MANAGEMENT SCIENTIST Indefinite. $56K - $69K plus superannuation (Ref: ST99-09) CSIRO Tropical Agriculture, Brisbane Qld, AUSTRALIA This position will form a part of a multidisciplinary team analysing crop-soil-climate-management interactions in complex and highly variable Australian sugarcane production systems. The team aims to develop novel management options and solutions that satisfy the three elements of sustainability; i.e. profitability, maintenance of the resource base and minimal environmental impact. Management strategies for water and nitrogen that have both profitability and environmental benefits will be a focus, and the appointee will have both experimental and modelling skills. Experience in analysing soil fertility/plant nutrition processes and their impacts on agricultural production systems would be an advantage. Project Officer - Plant and Soil Chemistry 3-Year Term. $33K - $49K plus superannuation (Ref: ST99-10) CSIRO Tropical Agriculture, Brisbane Qld, AUSTRALIA This position will be a part of a multidisciplinary team with responsibility for day-to-day support for research aimed at improving the management of nitrogen in sugarcane farming via both improved fertiliser and irrigation management practices, and innovative crop and soil monitoring techniques. The current focus of the position will be on the analytical dimension of a project that uses the monitoring of levels of amino acids in cane supplied to a sugar mill as a guide to N fertilisation practice back on the farm. This involves work on cane farms, in sugar mills and in plant/soil chemistry laboratories. Experience in plant and soil analytical chemistry procedures, and data analysis and presentation is essential, and communication skills for liaison with clients would be an advantage. Software Development Officer - Cane Supply Modelling 3-Year Term. $43K - $56K plus superannuation (Ref: ST99-11) CSIRO Tropical Agriculture and CRC for Sustainable Sugar Production, Brisbane Qld, AUSTRALIA This position will be primarily responsible for development and delivery of user-friendly versions of current mathematical programming research models aimed at evaluation of options for alternative cane supply arrangements. This will involve working as a member of a multidisciplinary team and with industry, to develop efficient model inputs and software to achieve greater adoptions of these tools by industry. Experience in computer science and information technology is essential. Skills in memory and CPU code optimisation and technology transfer to clients would be an advantage.
