Sensor History

To List Subscribers:

I have heard many interesting and fascinating stories about the measurement
of soil moisture. I would like to publish (on the internet, of course) a
summary of the history of these methods and instruments for all to enjoy.
For this, I need your help. Please provide any myths, fables, anecdotes or
references that you would like to share. I will follow any of your wishes
concerning anonymity or fame.

My earliest recollection of moisture measurement comes from a device which I
believe was of European orgin. It would predict the weather using figurines
suspended by a rawhide string--presumably length varying with humidity.
Sunny days brought out children and gloomy days brought out the housemaid.
I think that I broke it trying to figure out where to wind it up.
