FACULTY POSITION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING MATERIALS The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is seeking candidates to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level commencing Fall 1997. Candidates who have already demonstrated strong success early in their academic careers and who would qualify for promotion to Associate Professor will also be considered. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D., preferably in Civil Engineering (a postdoctoral experience and professional registration are desirable). The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching as well as to specialized graduate education, sponsored research, and scholarly work. The successful candidate will teach courses related to civil engineering materials and civil infrastructure engineering (pavements, nondestructive evaluation, and management systems). A strong theoretical and experimental background and research work experience in the area of civil infrastructure management with emphasis on transportation structures, pavements, materials testing, instrumentation and/or nondestructive testing is desired. The candidate should have an interest in collaborating with other faculty in an interdisciplinary research and to work with a highly motivated group. The Via Department of Civil Engineering currently has 38 faculty members, with over 250 graduate students and 500 undergraduate students. The $10-million Via Endowment allows the Department to offer a significant number of scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified students. The Department has several research facilities including a 17,000 square foot Structures and Materials Laboratory. Candidates must have graduate studies in electrical engineering, civil engineering or related areas. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong theoretical/ experimental knowledge in nondestructive testing with emphasis on electromagnetic wave applications to civil structures, signal analysis, radio frequency measurements, and ground penetration radar applications. Field experience is desired but not a requirement. The candidate should have an interest to work on interdisciplinary research (specially with electrical engineering and civil engineering departments) within a highly motivated group.
