• The GLOBE initiative relaunched their enhanced website 20 Aug 2002. The GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment) Soil Moisture Project at the University of Arizona's Department of Hydrology & Water Resources. In a nutshell, GLOBE is a K-12 education outreach program active in approximately 8000 schools worldwide. The goal is to inspire young people in the natural and environmental sciences in a hands-on, minds on, inquiry-based context. The GLOBE Soil Moisture Project seeks specifically to encourage and enhance students' knowledge and understanding of the importance of soil moisture in the hydrologic cycle, and in the context of global climate modeling.

• The Global Soil Wetness Project (part of COLA) looks at modelling the larger scale dynamics of weather: "The GSWP is charged with producing a 2-year global data set of soil moisture, temperature, runoff, and surface fluxes. The motivation for GSWP stems from the paradox that soil wetness is an important component of the global energy and water balance, but it is unknown over most of the globe."
  In particular, see the report explaining the problem of establishing hydrologically important quantities from remote sensing or existing land-based observational networks.
