    >Folks,
    >What's the single best, all around reference on neutron probes?
    >
Steve Evett writes: "I still think Greacen (1981) is the best single text.
Greacen, E.L. 1981. Soil water assessment by the neutron method. CSIRO, East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. 140 pp.
It has some holes though and may be difficult to obtain. Cliff Hignett might know about obtaining it. I don't know of anything that is a single comprehensive treatment. You probably ought to look at Cliff Hignett's and my chapters in Comparison of Soil Water Measurement Using the Neutron Scattering, Time Domain Reflectometry and Capacitance Methods. International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, Austria, IAEA-TECDOC-1137. 2000. Mine is available for download at http://www.cprl.ars.usda.gov/programs/ (see link below).

Several relevant papers were published in Management of Irrigation and Drainage Systems, Integrated Perspectives. Proceedings of the 1993 ASCE national conference on irrigation and drainage engineering, Park City, UT, July 21-23, 1993. Authors include Dickey, Stone, Allen, and Wright."

The bibilograph of neutron probe papers at http://www.iaea.org/programmes/nafa/d1/public/d1_pbl_2.html#pbl4 should be useful as well. or in pdf format http://www.iaea.org/programmes/nafa/d1/public/d1_pbl_2_1.pdf

    Unsure where to start? ..
then read this overview and description of tensiometers and whether to choose these over other more advanced sensors. Also discussed are soil water sensor with respect to automated weather stations. By Tom A. Murphy. Then move on through the list.
