Wood Harris is an African-American actor. He is the younger brother of fellow actor, Steve Harris.

Early Life

Sherwin David Wood Harris was born on October 17, 1969 in Chicago, Illinois. His father, John, worked as a bus driver, while his mother, Mattie, was a housewife who took care of her two sons.

Since he was young, Harris had shown brilliance in both acting, and his studies. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University, with a BA in theater arts. After he completed his BA, he began working in several theater productions. Later, Harris enrolled in New York University to receive a degree in Master of Arts. During his college years, he became a member of the school’s basketball team, and this helped him improve his acting abilities. While in NYU, he starred in many theater productions and also appeared in several other TV shows and films.

Career Highlights

In 1994, Harris landed his first major movie role in Above The Rim, where he got to work with the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. In Above The Rim, Harris played the role of Motaw, the star player of the film’s basketball team and a close friend of Birdie (played by Shakur). Birdie and Motaw were the main antagonists of the film. After that, Harris went back to doing theater in many off-Broadway productions. By the end of the 90s, Harris found himself appearing in many blockbuster films, like the romantic-comedy As Good As It Gets (starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt), and the Woody Allen-directed Celebrity (which featured Kenneth Branagh, Hank Azaria, Winona Ryder, and Leonardo DiCaprio, among many others).

Harris won the New York Film Festival’s 1st Run Best Actor Award in the mid-90s for his role in Morning Prep, directed by Malcolm Lee. Like Harris, Lee was also an avid basketball player.

By the turn of the 2000s, Harris took more roles – One of them being legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix in the autobiographical film, Hendrix. He also starred in Remember The Titans (as Julius Campbell), which landed him two nominations, namely the Blockbuster Movie Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, and the NAACP Image Award.

Two years later, Harris starred in Paid in Full, directed by Damon Dash. He was one of the film’s three main leads, the other two being rapper Cam’ron and actor Mekhi Phifer. The film was produced by Dash and musician/rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter.

Despite having had plenty of experience in film, Harris also had his fair share of TV programs. In 2005, he portrayed the role of drug lord Avon Barksdale in The Wire, an HBO original drama.

Harris also had a music career – He has recorded and released a rap album, called K-Town. The album’s name was taken after a Chicago neighborhood. All of the songs in the album referred to Harris’ childhood years, growing up in Illinois. He followed up K-Town with Beautiful Wonderful, released in 2005. Harris has mentioned in several interviews that he intends to release more music in the future.

In 1999, Harris met his future wife, Rebekah, on the set of one of his films. They started dating in 2000, a few weeks before the premiere of his movie, Remember the Titans. During the beginning of their relationship, the couple was frequently photographed by the paparazzi. They married in 2001. Harris and his wife have two children. Rebekah Harris has often praised her husband’s skills as a father and husband. Their relationship is one of the most secure ones in Hollywood, and it looks like they won’t be divorcing anytime soon.
